Bynum recently purchased a 2004’ Subaru Outback Wagon, AWD 35^th Anniversary Edition. The vehicle combines the advantages of AWD with the benefits of 26-27 miles per gallon for his commute. “A colleague had recently bought a lifted truck from Millennium and was really impressed,” said Eric. “They told me the team was fair, easy to work with, didn’t haggle on price and even would find the car I wanted if not in stock.”

Bynum had been draining his pocketbook attempting to maintenance a 2002 Mercedes C230 and was ready for a more suitable vehicle that featured AWD and storage space. “Once the car popped up on the lot, it was only a matter of hours to test drive, secure financing and complete the deal,” he said. “The team even worked with my current financing company, whom I have a great relationship. In the past I’ve spent all day on a lot. This was an amazing experience.” Eric says he even got a fair price on his trade-in.

Follow simple steps when consigning a car to a dealer

Consumer: I’m planning on selling my car and considering consigning it to a dealer. Any suggestions for how to get a fair deal?

How Car Consignments Work

When you consign a car, the dealer will ask how much you want for it. So before you even drive on the lot, you should know how much your car is worth. Check used-vehicle guides, the newspaper and the Kelly Blue Book or the National Auto Dealers Association (NADA) Used Car Pricing Guide (Pacific Northwest edition).

Let’s say you and the dealer agree on a figure of $5,000. The dealer’s job is to sell your car for no less than $5,000; anything above that is theirs to keep. Now let’s assume the dealer sells your car for $6,000. Here’s what you each get:

• Your Agreed Cost – $5,000

• Price that Dealer Sells Car – $6,000

• Difference – $1,000

• Safety Fee - $90

• Detail Fee – $100

• You Get $4,810• Dealer Keeps = $1,550

*If the vehicle is not sold and is picked up before one month is over a $250 no sale fee will apply

Questions You Should Ask

Ask the dealer these important questions before you sign any paperwork:

– Who is responsible for insurance? You may be responsible for the car while it’s on the lot. So check with your insurance company in advance to make sure you’re covered for theft or damages.

– Who will pay off any liens?

– Can the dealer accept another vehicle or personal property as part of the minimum price?

– How long does the dealer have to find a buyer and what happens to the vehicle if it’s not sold in the time specified?

– What repairs will be made if needed and who pays for them?

– What specific expenses will be incurred by the dealer that may affect the seller’s payment? For example: storage, advertising, car detailing and transportation from one location to another.

Signing the Contract

When you are ready to leave your car with a dealer, the two of you should carefully write up an agreement that includes the following terms – all required by law (RCW 46.70.028, WAC 308-66-155):

– Names of the parties, including the legal owner of the vehicle.

– Location of the title and guarantee by seller that they have clear title.

– Any payoff due on vehicle.

– The agreed price to sell the vehicle.

– Date of the agreement.

– Duration of the agreement.

– A description of the vehicle, including make, model, VIN and plate number.

– Signatures of the parties.

Be sure to carefully read all of the terms of the agreement, including fees.

Do not sign over the title.

After the Sale

The dealer must do the following after selling your car:

– Pay you within 10 days of when title is delivered to the purchaser.

– Transfer the title.

– Hold all funds in trust as required by law.

Following these steps should help for a smooth and easy transaction.

Lifted Trucks Battles of the Sexes...Ciara Harding Versus....Every Male or Female-Owned Truck on the Planet?

Millennium Motors seeking men and women willing to put their Lifted Truck to the test

Monroe, WA- October, 2010-Ciara Harding believes she is the Queen and King of Lifted Trucks in the neighborhoods approximately one hour north and east of Seattle. She says her 02' Chevy Crew Cab Lifted Truck is the result of a love affair with trucks that begin at birth. Thanks to Millennium Motors, she now drives the Lifted Truck of her dreams and says she leaves men and their trucks in the dust.

"What I find even more interesting is that the male species CANNOT believe that I own a huge lifted truck," says Ciara. "Everyone I have spoken to does not believe me at first that the truck is mine, they are convinced that is has got to be my boy friend's; I have even had to offer to show them the title, proof that it is mine."

Ciara says she has always been a huge truck person, Lifted Trucks in particular, and has never owned a car. She loves all of the comments from gentleman seeking a picture of her in front of her truck and, moms and their kids excited to see her "Monster Truck!!" when driving through parking lots.

"Men are the funniest a lot of time, because my truck is always a lot bigger then theirs, "says Ciara. "I took it out to the dunes in Moses Lake and WAS the biggest truck out there out of like 100, and everyone was impressed that a girl was the one that owned it!"

Ciara still stops by Millennium Motors to check out the latest big monster trucks but for the moment still thinks hers is better. "I still have some modifications that I want to do to it, but for now, ill keep making men around the state jealous!"

Most Important Question

During my second month of nursing school, our professor gave us a pop
quiz. I was a conscientious student and had breezed through the
questions, until I read the last one: 'What is the first name of
the woman who cleans the school?" Surely this was some kind of joke.
I had seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall, dark-haired
and in her 50s, but how would I know her name? I handed in my paper,
leaving the last question blank. Before class ended, one student
asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade.
Absolutely, said the professor. "In your careers you will meet many
people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if
all you do is smile and say hello". I've never forgotten that lesson. I
also learned her name was Dorothy.

There are two days in every week about which we should not worry.

In 1883, a creative engineer named John Roebling was inspired by an idea to build a spectacular bridge connecting New York with the Long Island. However bridge building experts throughout the world thought that this was an impossible feat and told Roebling to forget the idea. It just could not be done. It was not practical. It had never been done before.

Roebling could not ignore the vision he had in his mind of this bridge. He thought about it all the time and he knew deep in his heart that it could be done. He just had to share the dream with someone else. After much discussion and persuasion he managed to convince his son Washington, an up and coming engineer, that the bridge in fact could be built.

Working together for the first time, the father and son developed concepts of how it could be accomplished and how the obstacles could be overcome. With great excitement and inspiration, and the headiness of a wild challenge before them, they hired their crew and began to build their dream bridge.

The project started well, but when it was only a few months underway a tragic accident on the site took the life of John Roebling. Washington was injured and left with a certain amount of brain damage, which resulted in him not being able to walk or talk or even move.

Everyone had a negative comment to make and felt that the project should be scrapped since the Roeblings were the only ones who knew how the bridge could be built. In spite of his handicap Washington was never discouraged and still had a burning desire to complete the bridge and his mind was still as sharp as ever.

He tried to inspire and pass on his enthusiasm to some of his friends, but they were too daunted by the task. As he lay on his bed in his hospital room, with the sunlight streaming through the windows, a gentle breeze blew the flimsy white curtains apart and he was able to see the sky and the tops of the trees outside for just a moment.

It seemed that there was a message for him not to give up. Suddenly an idea hit him. All he could do was move one finger and he decided to make the best use of it. By moving this, he slowly developed a code of communication with his wife.

He touched his wife's arm with that finger, indicating to her that he wanted her to call the engineers again. Then he used the same method of tapping her arm to tell the engineers what to do. It seemed foolish but the project was under way again.

For 13 years Washington tapped out his instructions with his finger on his wife's arm, until the bridge was finally completed. Today the spectacular Brooklyn Bridge stands in all its glory as a tribute to the triumph of one man's indomitable spirit and his determination not to be defeated by circumstances. It is also a tribute to the engineers and their team work, and to their faith in a man who was considered mad by half the world. It stands too as a tangible monument to the love and devotion of his wife who for 13 long years patiently decoded the messages of her husband and told the engineers what to do.

Perhaps this is one of the best examples of a never-say-die attitude that overcomes a terrible physical handicap and achieves an impossible goal.

Often when we face obstacles in our day-to-day life, our hurdles seem very small in comparison to what many others have to face. The Brooklyn Bridge shows us that dreams that seem impossible can be realised with determination and persistence, no matter what the odds are.

Even the most distant dream can be realized with determination and persistence.

About a hundred years ago, a man looked at the morning newspaper and to his surprise and horror, read his name in the obituary column. The news papers had reported the death of the wrong person by mistake. His first response was shock. Am I here or there? When he regained his composure, his second thought was to find out what people had said about him. The obituary read, "Dynamite King Dies." And also "He was the merchant of death." This man was the inventor of dynamite and when he read the words "merchant of death," he asked himself a question, "Is this how I am going to be remembered?" He got in touch with his feelings and decided that this was not the way he wanted to be remembered. From that day on, he started working toward peace. His name was Alfred Nobel and he is remembered today by the great Nobel Prize.

Just as Alfred Nobel got in touch with his feelings and redefined his values, we should step back and do the same.

The Old Man and the Dog

"Watch out! You nearly broad sided that car!" My father yelled at me. "Can't you do anything right?"

Those words hurt worse than blows. I turned my head toward the elderly man in the seat beside me, daring me to challenge him. A lump rose in my throat as I averted my eyes. I wasn't prepared for another battle.

"I saw the car, Dad. Please don't yell at me when I'm driving."

My voice was measured and steady, sounding far calmer than I really felt.

Dad glared at me, then turned away and settled back. At home I left Dad in front of the television and went outside to collect my thoughts. Dark, heavy clouds hung in the air with a promise of rain. The rumble of distant thunder seemed to echo my inner turmoil. What could I do about him?

Dad had been a lumberjack in Washington and Oregon He had enjoyed being outdoors and had reveled in pitting his strength against the forces of nature. He had entered grueling lumberjack competitions, and had placed often.

The shelves in his house were filled with trophies that attested to his powers.

The years marched on relentlessly. The first time he couldn't lift a heavy log, he joked about it; but later that same day I saw him outside alone, straining to lift it. He became irritable whenever anyone teased him about his advancing age, or when he couldn't do something he had done as a younger man.

Four days after his sixty-seventh birthday, he had a heart attack. An ambulance sped him to the hospital while a paramedic administered CPR to keep blood and oxygen flowing.

At the hospital, Dad was rushed into an operating room. He was lucky; he survived... But something inside Dad died. His zest for life was gone He obstinately refused to follow doctor's orders. Suggestions and offers of help were turned aside with sarcasm and insults. The number of visitors thinned, then finally stopped altogether. Dad was left alone.

My husband, Dick, and I asked Dad to come live with us on our small farm. We hoped the fresh air and rustic atmosphere would help him adjust.

Within a week after he moved in, I regretted the invitation. It seemed nothing was satisfactory. He criticized everything I did. I became frustrated and moody. Soon I was taking my pent-up anger out on Dick. We began to bicker and argue..

Alarmed, Dick sought out our pastor and explained the situation. The clergyman set up weekly counseling appointments for us. At the close of each session he prayed, asking God to soothe Dad's
troubled mind.

But the months wore on and God was silent. Something had to be done and it was up to me to do it.

The next day I sat down with the phone book and methodically called each of the mental health clinics listed in the Yellow Pages. I explained my problem to each of the sympathetic voices that answered in vain.

Just when I was giving up hope, one of the voices suddenly exclaimed, "I just read something that might help you! Let me go get the article."

I listened as she read.. The article described a remarkable study done at a nursing home. All of the patients were under treatment for chronic depression. Yet their attitudes had improved dramatically when they were given responsibility for a dog.

I drove to the animal shelter that afternoon. After I filled out a questionnaire, a uniformed officer led me to the kennels. The odor of disinfectant stung my nostrils as I moved down the row of pens. Each contained five to seven dogs. Long-haired dogs, curly-haired dogs, black dogs, spotted dogs all jumped up, trying to reach me. I studied each one but rejected one after the other for various reasons too big, too small, too much hair. As I neared the last pen a dog in the shadows of the far corner struggled to his feet, walked to the front of the run and sat down. It was a pointer, one of the dog world's aristocrats. But this was a caricature of the breed..

Years had etched his face and muzzle with shades of gray. His hipbones jutted out in lopsided triangles. But it was his eyes that caught and held my attention.. Calm and clear, they beheld me unwaveringly.

I pointed to the dog "Can you tell me about him?"

The officer looked, then shook his head in puzzlement. "He's a funny one. Appeared out of nowhere and sat in front of the gate. We brought him in, figuring someone would be right down to claim him. That was two weeks ago and we've heard nothing. His time is up tomorrow.." He gestured helplessly.

As the words sank in I turned to the man in horror. "You mean you're going to kill him?"

"Ma'am," he said gently, "that's our policy. We don't have room for every unclaimed dog."

I looked at the pointer again. The calm brown eyes awaited my decision. "I'll take him," I said..

I drove home with the dog on the front seat beside me. When I reached the house I honked the horn twice. I was helping my prize out of the car when Dad shuffled onto the front porch. "Ta-da! Look what I got for you, Dad!" I said excitedly.

Dad looked, then wrinkled his face in disgust. "If I had wanted a dog I would have gotten one. And I would have picked out a better specimen than that bag of bones. Keep it! I don't want it" Dad waved his arm scornfully and turned back toward the house.

Anger rose inside me It squeezed together my throat muscles and pounded into my temples. "You'd better get used to him, Dad. He's staying!"

Dad ignored me. "Did you hear me, Dad?" I screamed.

At those words Dad whirled angrily, his hands clenched at his sides, his eyes narrowed and blazing with hate.

We stood glaring at each other like duelists, when suddenly the pointer pulled free from my grasp. He wobbled toward my dad and sat down in front of him. Then slowly, carefully, he raised his paw.

Dad's lower jaw trembled as he stared at the uplifted paw. Confusion replaced the anger in his eyes. The pointer waited patiently. Then Dad was on his knees hugging the animal.

It was the beginning of a warm and intimate friendship. Dad named the pointer Cheyenne. Together he and Cheyenne explored the community. They spent long hours walking down dusty lanes. They spent reflective moments on the banks of streams, angling for tasty trout. They even started to attend Sunday services together, Dad sitting in a pew and Cheyenne lying quietly at his feet.

Dad and Cheyenne were inseparable throughout the next three years. Dad's bitterness faded, and he and Cheyenne made many friends. Then late one night I was startled to feel Cheyenne's cold nose burrowing through our bed covers. He had never before come into our bedroom at night. I woke Dick, put on my robe and ran into my father's room. Dad lay in his bed, his face serene. But his spirit had left quietly sometime during the night.

Two days later my shock and grief deepened when I discovered Cheyenne lying dead beside Dad's bed.. I wrapped his still form in the rag rug he had slept on. As Dick and I buried him near a favorite fishing hole, I silently thanked the dog for the help he had given me in restoring Dad's peace of mind.

The morning of Dad's funeral dawned overcast and dreary. This day looks like the way I feel, I thought, as I walked down the aisle to the pews reserved for family. I was surprised to see the many friends Dad and Cheyenne had made filling the church. The pastor began his eulogy. It was a tribute to both Dad and the dog who had changed his life. And then the pastor turned to Hebrews 13:2. "Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it."

"I've often thanked God for sending that angel," he said.

For me, the past dropped into place, completing a puzzle that I had not seen before: the sympathetic voice that had just read the right article....

Cheyenne 's unexpected appearance at the animal shelter. .. ..his calm acceptance and complete devotion to my father. . and the proximity of their deaths. And suddenly I understood. I knew that God had answered my prayers after all.

SOAR ABOVE THE CLOUDS

Years ago, my husband Lee and I planned a vacation in the Southwest. Bravely, we bought airline tickets for the entire family, including three small children, ages four through ten. It would be our first flying experience. The morning of our exodus, dark clouds scowled from above and intermittently let loose tears. At the airport, friends and family saw us off, smiling and waving…and waving…and waving. As it turned out, our departure was delayed because of the inclement weather and eventually, the weary bon voyage wishers dispersed.

On the plane, we stared out into the gloomy day. My spirit sagged more by the minute. The children began to squirm and whine and the youngest stood in the seat, leaning to press his small face to the window and peer out, his fastened seatbelt pooled around his feet. The entire atmosphere aboard was dismal and negative. Only the crewmembers emitted pleasantries. Even they seemed forced.

Finally, the moment came when the engines roared to life and we began to move. We all settled back and felt the incredible sensation of gaining momentum and being raised up, up…until we lifted from earth. I gazed out the window. The clouds swallowing us were gray and angry. I gulped back the flavor of desolation.

A remarkable thing happened along the way up into the sky.

Suddenly, we burst free of the dark clouds, into glorious sunshine and a sky so blue and clear I could see to infinity. Even the clouds, now below us, were snowy white billows. Joy unspeakable bubbled up inside me. I’ve never before nor since experienced such a mystical example of rising above darkness.

We’ve all experienced it. All along our journey here, we encounter dark and rough places through which we must struggle. Such experiences have stirred me to reach out to others and simply say, Hang in there! Above those dark clouds, the sun is shining!Here are five tips for breaking through clouds:

1. TRUST: Understand that you have little to no control over circumstances. This aha will initially give you a great sense of helplessness. The world around us has its own variables/agenda and we often end up on the short end of the stick. We cannot help that. What we can help is the way we perceive ourselves as we journey through dark clouds. Trust in your ability and strength to persevere. Buried in grief years ago, I remember distinctly stopping dead in my tracks one day and saying to myself, “Self-pity will kill me.” And I knew in my heart of hearts that was true. From that moment on, I refused to be a victim. No “poor me” passed my lips. It was the beginning of renewal.
2. STAY BUSY: Nothing can restore one’s emotional and spiritual balance like staying active. The mind can only fully focus on one thing at a time. Whether your pain is from grief, heartbreak, depression or myriad other sources, forcing your focus on positive things will aid in a smoother healing. During grief, I sang in the college choral group. As a scholarship section leader, I led ensembles for the upcoming Spring Concert. Nothing is more difficult than singing when one’s heart is breaking but the group patiently coaxed me along, overlooking my tears, validating me with how “needed” I was until, weeks later, I sang from Sound of Music as joyfully as the rest. Staying busy was cathartic in my healing, moving on process. To renewal.
3. BE FLEXIBLE: The journey through dark clouds is always difficult. Just when you think you’re about to top them, setbacks can occur. These are the times you must chill out and ride it out until you reach another plateau of recovery. A friend of mine has a daughter, whom I’ll call Laurie, who is going through drug rehab via a methadone clinic. Laurie wants desperately to wean off the methadone and get on with her life. Recently, she asked that her dosage be reduced earlier than scheduled. She did well the first time. The next week she asked it be reduced five more milligrams. This time, she experienced severe withdrawal symptoms—nausea, sweating, pain and nervousness. I was impressed when my friend lovingly encouraged Laurie that she would be fine and that soon, she would be able to come off it completely. Laurie soon leveled out and her medication is again being lowered systematically. She is learning to be flexible in her healing, knowing that eventually, she will be complete and whole. Renewed.
4. EXERCISE YOUR INNER STRENGTH: We must increase our sense of power by exercising it. Sure, it’s tough sometimes, especially when we’re at our lowest ebb. During my period of loss, I yanked myself up by the bootstraps by thinking of how my departed adolescent daughter has trusted in me to always do the right thing. Of how Mama was, to her, Superwoman, who always made things right and who could conquer anything. It was on that note that I put one foot in front of the other and kept on keeping on during that difficult time. “Oh, you’re so brave,” folks told me, and I thought, “You just don’t know what I’m feeling inside.” But looking back, I saw how important that interval was in my journey to renewal and healing. It was the walk—the exercise—that built up my spirit and mind to where I was able to walk through the darkness with unprecedented strength.
5. GATHER ROLE MODELS: Role models serve us in many ways. They forge us a path and inspire us to follow. Ideally, they are ones who love us in return. They bring us to a clearer understanding of the who we are and what we’re meant to be. My best friend had a difficult childhood. Abandoned by her mother at ten and then her father a couple of years later, she was reared by her aging grandmother, a poor but stalwart woman who taught her good common sense. Charlene didn’t let her poverty stop her from becoming who she knew she was meant to be. She picked role models from amongst those who nurtured her, whose attributes she admired. Teachers and church folks she loved and admired. She chose her home economics teacher’s posture and carriage, practicing it until perfected. From others she gathered nuggets of diction, health habits, wisdom, and academic excellence. She dressed impeccably all through high school, sewing her own clothing from scraps of leftover material from clients she sewed for. I didn’t know until later of her dire circumstances. After all, she’d always had a big old smile and was homecoming queen with a reaching out personality that drew folks like butterflies to flowers. Now she’s one of the most beautiful and strongest women I know, compliments in part from her Nanny. Charlene was wise enough to know the value of following exemplary role models. So do I. Especially the ones who have weathered many of life’s thunderstorms and rise above those dark clouds into sunshine and clear skies. It lets me know that if they can soar above the clouds, so can I!

THE POWER OF "WE"

As a leader, do you honor and appreciate the power of WE? Do you stop to thank and recognize the members of your team? Do you consistently show an attitude of gratitude?

The story of Charles Plumb is inspiring and emphasizes the value of each individual of a team. Captain Charles Plumb, a graduate of the Naval Academy, whose plane, after 74 successful combat missions over North Vietnam, was shot down. He parachuted to safety, but was captured, tortured and spent 2,103 days in a small box-like cell.

After surviving the ordeal, Captain Plumb received the Silver Star, Bronze Star, the Legion of Merit and two Purple Hearts, and returned to America and spoke to many groups about his experience and how it compared to the challenges of every day life.

Shortly after coming home, Charlie and his wife were sitting in a restaurant. A man rose from a nearby table, walked over and said, "You're Plumb! You flew jet fighters in Vietnam from the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk . You were shot down!"

Surprised that he was recognized, Charlie responded, "How in the world did you know that?" The man replied, "I packed your parachute." Charlie looked up with surprise. The man pumped his hand, gave a thumbs-up, and said, "I guess it worked!"

Charlie stood to shake the man's hand, and assured him, "It most certainly did work. If it had not worked, I would not be here today."

Charlie could not sleep that night, thinking about the man. He wondered if he might have seen him and not even said, "Good morning, how are you?" He thought of the many hours the sailor had spent bending over a long wooden table in the bottom of the ship, carefully folding the silks and weaving the shrouds of each chute, each time holding in his hands the fate of someone he didn't know.

Plumb then began to realize that along with the physical parachute, he needed mental, emotional and spiritual parachutes. He had called on all these supports during his long and painful ordeal.

A story tells of two friends who were walking through the desert. During some point of the journey, they had an argument, and one friend slapped the other one in the face. The one who got slapped was hurt, but without saying anything, she wrote in the sand:

"TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SLAPPED ME IN THE FACE"

They kept on walking, until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a bath. The one who had been slapped got stuck in the mire and started drowning, but her friend saved her. After she recovered from the near drowning, she wrote on a stone:

"TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SAVED MY LIFE"

The friend, who had slapped and saved her best friend, asked her, "After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand, and now, you write on a stone, why?"

The other friend replied: "When someone hurts us, we should write it down in sand, where the winds of forgiveness can erase it, but when someone does something good for us, we must engrave it in stone, so no wind can ever erase it."

Life Throws A Brick At You

How many times did life throws a brick at you to get your attention. I guess that we are all too easily distracted. TV, commercials, radio and advertisement and toys – too much of these things have drowned out life’s voice.

A young and successful executive was traveling down a neighborhood street, going a bit too fast in his new Jaguar. He was watching for kids darting out from between parked cars and slowed down when he thought he saw something. As his car passed, no children appeared, instead, a brick smashed into the Jaguar's side door. He slammed on the brakes and spun the Jaguar back to the spot from where the brick had been thrown.

He jumped out of the car, grabbed some kid and pushed him up against a parked car, shouting, "What was that all about and who are you? Just what the heck are you doing?" Building up a head of steam, he went on. "That's a new car and that brick you threw is going to cost a lot of money. Why did you do it?"

"Please, mister, please, I'm sorry. I didn't know what else to do!" pleaded the youngster. "I threw the brick because no one else would stop."

Tears were dripping down the boy's chin as he pointed around the parked car. "It's my brother," he said. "He rolled off the curb and fell out of his wheelchair and I can't lift him up." Sobbing, the boy asked the executive, "Would you please help me get him back into his wheelchair? He's hurt and he's too heavy for me."

Moved beyond words, the driver tried to swallow the rapidly swelling lump in his throat. He lifted the young man back into the wheelchair and took out his handkerchief and wiped the scrapes and cuts, checking to see that everything was going to be okay.

"Thank you, sir. And God bless you," the grateful child said to him. The man then watched the little boy push his brother to the sidewalk toward their home. It was a long walk back to his Jaguar... a long, slow walk. He never did repair the side door. He kept the dent to remind him not to go through life so fast that someone has to throw a brick at you to get your attention.

There once was a little boy who had a bad temper.

His father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into the back of the fence.

The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Over the next few weeks, as he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily gradually dwindled down.

He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence.

Finally the day came when the boy didn't lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper.

The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone. The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence.

Automobile manufacturer Henry Ford was born July 30, 1863, on his family's farm in Dearborn, Michigan. From the time he was a young boy, Ford enjoyed tinkering with machines. Farm work and a job in a Detroit machine shop afforded him ample opportunities to experiment. He later worked as a part-time employee for the Westinghouse Engine Company. By 1896, Ford had constructed his first horseless carriage which he sold in order to finance work on an improved model.

Ford incorporated the Ford Motor Company in 1903, proclaiming, "I will build a car for the great multitude." In October 1908, he did so, offering the Model T for $950. In the Model T's nineteen years of production, its price dipped as low as $280. Nearly 15,500,000 were sold in the United States alone. The Model T heralds the beginning of the Motor Age; the car evolved from luxury item for the well-to-do to essential transportation for the ordinary man.

Ford revolutionized manufacturing. By 1914, his Highland Park, Michigan plant, using innovative production techniques, could turn out a complete chassis every 93 minutes. This was a stunning improvement over the earlier production time of 728 minutes. Using a constantly-moving assembly line,subdivision of labor, and careful coordination of operations, Ford realized huge gains in productivity.

In 1914, Ford began paying his employees five dollars a day, nearly doubling the wages offered by other manufacturers. He cut the workday from nine to eight hours in order to convert the factory to a three-shift workday. Ford's mass-production techniques would eventually allow for the manufacture of a Model T every 24 seconds. His innovations made him an international celebrity.

Ford's affordable Model T irrevocably altered American society. As more Americans owned cars, urbanization patterns changed. The United States saw the growth of suburbia, the creation of a national highway system, and a population entranced with the possibility of going anywhere anytime. Ford witnessed many of these changes during his lifetime, all the while personally longing for the agrarian lifestyle of his youth. In the years prior to his death on April 7, 1947
Ford sponsored the restoration of an idyllic rural town called Greenfield Village.

A Story To Live By

My brother-in-law opened the bottom drawer of my sister's bureau and
lifted out a tissue-wrapped package. "This," he said, "is not a slip.
This is lingerie." He discarded the tissue and handed me the slip. It
was exquisite; silk, handmade and trimmed with a cobweb of lace. The
price tag with an astronomical figure on it was still attached. "Jan
bought this the first time we went to New York, at least 8 or 9 years
ago. She never wore it. She was saving it for a special occasion. Well,
I guess this is the occasion." He took the slip from me and put it on
the bed with the other clothes we were taking to the mortician. His
hands lingered on the soft material for a moment, then he slammed the
drawer shut and turned to me. "Don't ever save anything for a special
occasion. Every day you're alive is a special occasion."

I remembered those words through the funeral and the days that
followed when I helped him and my niece attend to all the sad chores
that follow an unexpected death. I thought about them on the plane
returning to California from the Midwestern town where my sister's
family lives. I thought about all the things that she hadn't seen or
heard or done. I thought about the things that she had done without
realizing that they were special. I'm still thinking about his words,
and they've changed my life.

I'm reading more and dusting less. I'm sitting on the deck and admiring
the view without fussing about the weeds in the garden.

I'm spending more time with my family and friends and less time in
committee meetings. Whenever possible, life should be a pattern of
experience to savor, not endure. I'm trying to recognize these moments
now and cherish them.

I'm not "saving" anything; we use our good china and crystal for every
special event-such as losing a pound, getting the sink unstopped, the
first camellia blossom.

I wear my good blazer to the market if I feel like it. My theory is if
I look prosperous, I can shell out $28.49 for one small bag of
groceries without wincing.

I'm not saving my good perfume for special parties; clerks in hardware
stores and tellers in banks have noses that function as well as my
party-going friends'.

"Someday" and "one of these days" are losing their grip on my
vocabulary. If it's worth seeing or hearing or doing, I want to see and
hear and do it now. I'm not sure what my sister would have done had
she known that she wouldn't be here for the tomorrow we all take for
granted.

It's those little things left undone that would make me angry if I knew
that my hours were limited. Angry because I put off seeing good friends
whom I was going to get in touch with-someday. Angry because I hadn't
written certain letters that I intended to write-one of these days.
Angry and sorry that I didn't tell my husband and daughter often enough
how much I truly love them.

I'm trying very hard not to put off, hold back, or save anything that
would add laughter and luster to our lives. And every morning when I
open my eyes, I tell myself that it is special. Every day, every
minute, every breath truly is...a gift from God.

When purchasing motor oil, look for a brand that is rated as being "Energy Conserving." Using the lowest multigrade of oil recommended in your owner's manual can improve the fuel efficiency of the engine, particularly when starting it cold.
Virtually all of your vehicle's mechanical systems can affect fuel efficiency if not properly maintained. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for checking the engine, cooling and ignition system, brakes, drivetrain and emission-control system.
Operating a vehicle with just one tire under-inflated by 8 psi (56 kPa) can reduce the life of the tire by 15 000 kilometres and increase the vehicle's fuel consumption by 4 percent. For improved fuel efficiency and enhanced safety, give your tires the attention they need.
Your tires need special attention during winter. Cold temperatures decrease the air pressure in tires, which adds to the rolling resistance caused by snow and slush. Measure tire pressure regularly, especially after a sharp drop in temperature.
Head off problems that can cost you fuel and money by performing a monthly check.
A poorly maintained vehicle can boost fuel consumption by up to 15 percent and greenhouse gas emissions by even more.
Almost all gasoline vehicles on the road today are fuel-injected. A recent study showed that replacing a clogged air filter on a vehicle with a fuel-injected gasoline engine does not improve fuel economy. However the study also showed that a clogged air filter may reduce acceleration performance.
Under-inflated tires are estimated to cost Canadian light-duty vehicle owners almost 643 million litres of fuel annually. At $0.79 per litre for regular unleaded gasoline, that amounts to more than $500 million a year in wasted fuel.
Neglecting to replace worn-out oil results in poor engine performance, higher fuel consumption and possibly severe engine damage.
A well-maintained vehicle is more reliable and could be worth more when you want to sell it.

Step 1

First you should check the air in your tires to make sure there properly inflated (normally around 32 to 35 lbs).
Step 2

Change your plugs, wires, and cap. Run octane booster regularly in your car with injector cleaner. Check your air filter as well. You should change your oil every 3000 miles. That's the basics of keeping your cars motor from going threw the gas just to run.
Step 3

Now you need to try and take the strain off the motor. Try to keep your car clean all that trash and junk in the truck adds up and the more weight you have the more gas to get up to speed. Try not to do much to the body of the car. Them big wings that the import racers use really slow you down. So with that knowledge its all up to you.

THE GOLD WRAPPING PAPER - An Inspiring Christmas Story

Once upon a time, a man punished his five-year-old daughter for using up the family’s only roll of expensive gold wrapping paper before Christmas.

Money was tight, so he became even more upset when on Christmas Eve, he saw that the child had used the expensive gold paper to decorate a large shoebox she had put under the Christmas tree.

Nevertheless, the next morning the little girl, filled with excitement, brought the gift box to her father and said, "This is for you, Daddy!"

As he opened the box, the father was embarrassed by his earlier overreaction, now regretting how he had punished her.

But when he opened the shoebox, he found it was empty and again his anger flared. "Don't you know, young lady,” he said harshly, “when you give someone a present there's supposed to be something inside the package!"

The little girl looked up at him with sad tears rolling from her eyes and whispered: "Daddy, it's not empty. I blew kisses into it until it was all full."

The father was crushed. He fell on his knees and put his arms around his precious little girl. He begged her to forgive him for his unnecessary anger.

An accident took the life of the child only a short time later. It is told that the father kept this little gold box by his bed for all the years of his life. Whenever he was discouraged or faced difficult problems, he would open the box, take out an imaginary kiss, and remember the love of this beautiful child who had put it there.

In a very real sense, each of us as human beings have been given an invisible golden box filled with unconditional love and kisses from our children, family, friends and God.

There is no more precious possession anyone could hold.

This is the age old question is it not? “How often do I really need to change my oil?”

Well, the truth is that almost all of the car companies out there and all of the oil change companies agree that you should get your oil changed every 5,000 kilometers / 3,000 miles. It might seem silly to you that this number would be so low because it is possible for a car to run on a tank of oil for much longer. However, there are a couple of reasons why these companies have set the mark at around 5,000 km / 3,000 miles. Well, for starters the more you drive your car without an oil change the more there is the likelihood that you oil is becoming contaminated with dirt/other elements. If your oil gets “dirty” it can lead to engine damage as the dirt/other elements make the oil abrasive and, in turn, this abrasive oil can damage your cylinder heads, pistons, etc. The dirtier the oil gets, the more damage it can inflict on your engine. Research points to the 5,000 km / 3,000 miles mark as a good time to inspect the vehicles oil for elements such as dirt/metals, etc. On the majority by this point the “dirt” or built up of other material would only be in the beginning stages and would do minimal damage if caught early.

Another important thing to look at is the fact that oil is the lifeblood of your car’s engine. The oil can tell you what is wrong with certain aspects of your vehicle. By getting your car in for an oil change every 5,000 km / 3,000 miles you can catch things that are going wrong before they really damage your engine. For example, if coolant is leaking into your oil it can cause serious damage to your engine and by bringing your car in for an oil change a mechanic can easily discover a problem like this by examining your oil. So by bringing your car in every 5,000 km / 3,000 miles you will be able to stay on top of possible repair problems.

Also by bringing in your car every 5,000 km / 3,000 miles it will give a mechanic a chance to take a look at your car and the engine. When this occurs they, being experts on vehicles, could easily spot problems or potential problems with your vehicle that you would never even notice. So this visit could save you even more time and money by allowing you to stay on top of all repair issues.

And let’s be honest when people see 3,000 miles they often only start thinking about an oil change when this number comes up. They usually do not actually make it in until 5,500 or 6,000 km. So it might seem like a good idea to save some cash and push your vehicle for longer than 5,000 km without an oil change but in the long run this could cost you big time.

It is also important to note that the research may point to engines driving longer than 5,000 km without needing an oil change. However, it is also important to realize that when these situations happen the car being driven is usually doing so in “normal driving conditions” which are actually the ideal or optimal driving circumstances. One rarely ever drives their car under such conditions but are rather more likely to encounter “severe service” driving. This type of driving includes short trips (especially in colder weather), city driving (stop and go), driving on gravel/dirt roads, and driving at highway speeds during hot conditions. Under these conditions your oil takes the biggest pounding and also it leads to the creation of a gaseous blob that can eat away at your cars engine and other elements. So it is very important to get your car into have the oil changed on regular intervals if you are driving under any of these conditions.

Why and how does oil break down?

The biggest reason oil breaks down is because of HEAT. Although there are many other factors which lead to the breakdown of oil, heat is the most important. Each type of oil that you put in your car has a certain amount of heat tolerance. The temperature to which this oil first gives off vapors is known as the “Flash Point”. This flash point differs between different types and brands of oils. A lower flash point means that that certain type of oil will suffer vaporization loss sooner when exposed to high temperatures and this will lead to oil burn off by hot pistons and cylinders; therefore, reducing the amount of oil in your engine.

Today’s engines are smaller in size and fed less oil than the engines of the past, while they are still expected to put out the same amount of power. This makes the engines run a lot hotter and it puts an increased burden on the oil, causing it to burn up and break down quicker.

Heat breaks down the smaller, lighter molecules of oil first. This can lead to deposits and sludge being left behind and coating your engine that can cause damage. This also only leaves the larger, heavier oil molecules behind to protect your engine. These particles do not flow as well and they tend to blanket your engine’s components, which only increases the heat problem and leads to further oil burn off.

As oil breaks down chemically over time it loses its lubrication properties. Oil thins out over time as it’s certain elements are lost to HEAT and other chemical changes. Oil, therefore, lasts longer in a more moderate climate zone than a hot one.

Summer and Winter Oil Types…

By consulting your car’s owners manual you will see that there are different types of oil that are better in certain conditions. There should even be a climate zone map that would point you in the correct direction as to which oil to use.

There are two basic types of oil:

1) 5W30 (for winter conditions)
2) 10W30 (for summer conditions)

10W30 is intended for very hot conditions, as this is when oil burns up the fastest. 10W30 does not thin out as easily as the 5W30 and it provides ones engine with more lubrication in hot conditions.

For most of Canada it is ok to just use 5W30 all year round if you like. The reason behind this is the fact that you car would never really be exposed to extremely hot conditions that often, except for maybe the odd day in the summer.

It is also a good idea to use 10W30 on older vehicles as it will give them a little more lubrication, especially in the winter. But don’t be surprised if you feel a few more knocks in your engine if you do so in the winter months.

Costs of an Oil Change…

When it comes to the cost of an oil change it is really quite an affordable venture. A lot of the shops where most of their business comes from oil changes, including quick-lube places, can change your oil for as cheap as $20 or $25. However, usually with these low prices there are also some hidden fees/extra costs that are tagged on so make sure you are careful before having one done at these places if you are not willing to pay more than the advertised price. Beware of some of these places as well because sometimes they do not have the best trained mechanics.

At a normal car repair shop including a place such as Canadian Tire you would be looking to spend anywhere between $30 and $35 for your oil change. This is including the cost of the filter and all of the additional taxes, labour, etc. This is relatively cheap considering that it is being done quickly and by a professional mechanic who would keep their eye open for any other car problems. When I recently went to Canadian Tire for an oil change they offered me a deal where I could purchase a discount card that would save me 10% on any car work I needed done in the future year. This card only cost me $30 and it came with a free oil change. Hence, I basically got a free discount card with my oil change.

Advantages of getting oil changed in a shop…

The number one reason why getting your oil changed in a shop is the way to go, has got to be the TIME factor. By taking your car to a shop to have your oil changed by a professional mechanic will save you a lot of time. These shops are all set up and ready to go. They have all of the necessary containers, drip trays, clean up elements, and the hydraulic lifts or the car pits that are necessary for changing your oil. In other words they have all of the proper tools and facilities for getting the job done quickly and efficiently. Is it really worth it to you to save a couple of bucks and be crawling around under your car and changing the oil yourself? Not even sure if you are doing everything exactly right and with this maybe taking you two to three times as long to complete as a regular mechanic?

You would also avoid getting yourself all dirty and it would also be a lot safer for you because you would not be lying under a 2000 to 6000 pound metal beast, with probably no one else around.

At home you would have to some how get rid of old used oil and filters. While at the shops they take care of this for you. And they would also be more environmentally friendly this way too, than your average “Back yard mechanic” would be.

Also it is important to remember that the mechanics at these shops are the EXPERTS and you are not; unless you are a mechanic but then why would you be reading this. They know about cars, they know about your oil, not only how to change it but also how to look at it, examine it and make sure there are no other signs in it or from it that would point to problems with your vehicle. They also have your car jacked up in the air and can take a good look at it and inspect it in a way you never could. They might notice things that you wouldn’t or things that you wouldn’t even know to look for. This mechanic will also grease up your front suspension, something that is often forgotten about by “backyard mechanics”. Would you want a mechanic to come into your workplace and attempt to set up a new computer network for your office? No, of course not, you want your IT guys to do that. Why because they are the best at what they do. Not you and not the mechanic. You see what I am getting at?

What to do with old oil…

It used to be that people would often just “throw out” their oil so to speak. Or often farmers and other back-yard mechanics would burn their oil somewhere on their property. However, in today’s environmentally friendly world this is not the way to go. You can’t just throw it out any more.

The nice thing again about having your oil changed by a shop is the fact that they would take care of this for you. However, if you are stuck on changing your oil yourself there are a few things you need to know. You must take your old oil and old filter to a disposal place where they “environmentally treat” such hazardous material. Often old oil will be either re-refined into other lubricants or it will be burned as fuel, or it is disposed of by other means. An example of this is a company called “Clean Harbors”. Or you could even take this oil to your local service station or quick lube shop and have them dispose of it for you.

Whatever you do, do not dump your old oil down a drain, into a storm sewer, on the ground, or throw it into the trash. As little as a pint of oil could cause an oil slick the size of a football field. Also one gallon of oil could contaminate one million gallons of drinking water. Most landfills will not accept used motor oil even if it is sealed in a container as this will eventually leak out into the ground.

It used to be at one point too that farmers/back-yard mechanics would “recycle” their oil or “re-use” it if you will. They would do this by using their old oil to undercoat their cars. They would do this by lifting up the car and then spraying the underneath with oil, therefore, coating the metallic parts and helping to protect the bottom of the car from salt in the winter and other elements that would lead to rusting or corroding of the car.

What happens if you don’t’ change oil often…

If you do not change your oil often you are risking possible internal damage to your engine. You are also risking premature failure to components of your vehicle.

If your oil is changed on a regular basis you will be able to accumulate a lot of mileage / kilometers on your engine before any major damage surfaces.

It is also important to note that as an engine wears there are small pieces of metal, plastic, and rubber that show up in the oil pan. So by changing your oil often a mechanic would be aware of such incidences and would discover the source and fix the problem.

By waiting a long time to have your oil change done, even if you are simply making short trips to the grocery store in the winter time, may leave your oil being fine and dandy but this sort of driving pattern leads to a build up of gaseous acid that can damage your engine greatly by corroding its components.

Quick Oil Tip:

Tech 2000, the Walmart brand of oil, and similar brands to it, are all made by the major oil refineries such as Shell or Esso. However, they are just sold under Walmart’s own brand name. These brands of oil are often much cheaper than major brand names of oil and yet they have the exact same specifications as the major brands. So check them out.

Trade-In Pros and Cons

Trading in your vehicle to a dealer has one primary advantage over selling it yourself: it's much simpler. Instead of listing a for-sale ad, taking time to meet potential buyers and worrying if someone's check is going to clear, consumers who decide to trade in their car simply come to a pricing agreement with a dealer. That's really about it.

But trading in a vehicle involves some issues to consider. The biggest trade-off is the likely possibility of receiving less money in a trade with a dealer than in a private sale. A dealer may be more willing to take a less-than-perfect car off your hands, but he's not going to do it at a premium. When you sell it yourself, you invest more time in the process, but you usually get rewarded with a bit of extra money.

Otherwise, the same general rules apply to trading in your old vehicle as to selling it on your own. First, know what the vehicle is worth. Check out the wholesale value that dealers are paying for that model, along with the retail price.

Dealers obtain the used vehicles they sell from two main sources — trade-ins from customers like you, and at auction. While it's difficult to know what dealers are paying for trade-ins, you can find out what wholesale price they are paying at auction. The most common reference guides are Kelley Blue Book and the National Automobile Dealers Association's Gold Book. The Kelley Blue Book and the NADA Gold Book are available in bookstores and in the reference section of most libraries. They include domestic and foreign vehicles that are 10 years old or newer. Take copies of the prices you find while researching to the dealer to show that you know what the car is worth.

Kelley Blue Book features prices on used vehicles from 1984 through the present model year. Cars.com's Kelley Blue Book tool is updated constantly and takes into account mileage, vehicle condition and factory extras of vehicles that have sold as recently as last week.

Just as you would prepare your car to sell to a private buyer, make sure your old car is clean inside and out before you shop it around to dealers. Know its condition — its strong points and its weak ones. Once you're at the dealership, push the virtues of your product, such as the optional equipment and accessories, its desirability in the marketplace, and any brand recommendations and awards by used-car guides or magazines. Don't mention its defects — let the dealer point those out, but don't deny or lie about them either. Know the cost of required repairs, and remind the dealer that it will cost him less to make repairs than it would you.

Beware of two extremes on trade-ins at dealerships — a really high trade-in value and a really low one. When you are offered an extremely high trade-in value for your vehicle, which will be used against the purchase of your new car, it means the dealer plans to cover the loss on the used car by putting a higher price on the new one. On the flip side, a rock-bottom price on your trade-in suggests that you're getting a low price on the new vehicle.

In the end, you may be able to negotiate a fair trade-in price that's less than the amount you'd get selling it on your own but is higher than the dealer's original offer. By eliminating all the hassle involved with selling the vehicle on your own, trading it in may be worthwhile. That's for you to decide.

Questions You Should Ask

Ask the dealer these important questions before you sign any paperwork:

– Who is responsible for insurance? You may be responsible for the car while it’s on the lot. So check with your insurance company in advance to make sure you’re covered for theft or damages.

– Who will pay off any liens?

– Can the dealer accept another vehicle or personal property as part of the minimum price?

– How long does the dealer have to find a buyer and what happens to the vehicle if it’s not sold in the time specified?

– What repairs will be made if needed and who pays for them?

– What specific expenses will be incurred by the dealer that may affect the seller’s payment? For example: storage, advertising, car detailing and transportation from one location to another.

Signing the Contract

When you are ready to leave your car with a dealer, the two of you should carefully write up an agreement that includes the following terms – all required by law (RCW 46.70.028, WAC 308-66-155):

– Names of the parties, including the legal owner of the vehicle.

– Location of the title and guarantee by seller that they have clear title.

– Any payoff due on vehicle.

– The agreed price to sell the vehicle.

– Date of the agreement.

– Duration of the agreement.

– A description of the vehicle, including make, model, VIN and plate number.

– Signatures of the parties.

Be sure to carefully read all of the terms of the agreement, including fees.

Do not sign over the title.

After the Sale

The dealer must do the following after selling your car:

– Pay you within 10 days of when title is delivered to the purchaser.

– Transfer the title.

– Hold all funds in trust as required by law.

Following these steps should help for a smooth and easy transaction.

Good, Better, Best: How to Improve Gas Mileage

Whether you are shopping for a new car or just trying to maintain the one you have, you can take some steps to get the best mileage out of your gas purchases. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation’s consumer protection agency, offers these tips to use fuel efficiently:

On the Road: Drive More Efficiently

Stay within posted speed limits. Gas mileage decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 miles per hour.
Stop aggressive driving. You can improve your gas mileage up to five percent around town if you avoid “jackrabbit” starts and stops by anticipating traffic conditions and driving gently.
Avoid unnecessary idling. It wastes fuel, costs you money, and pollutes the air. Turn off the engine if you anticipate a wait.
Combine errands. Several short trips taken from a cold start can use twice as much fuel as one trip covering the same distance when the engine is warm.
Use overdrive gears and cruise control when appropriate. They improve the fuel economy of your car when you’re driving on a highway.
Remove excess weight from the trunk. An extra 100 pounds in the trunk can reduce a typical car’s fuel economy by up to two percent.
Avoid packing items on top of your car. A loaded roof rack or carrier creates wind resistance and can decrease fuel economy by five percent.

At the Garage: Maintain Your Car

Keep your engine tuned. Tuning your engine according to your owner’s manual can increase gas mileage by an average of four percent. Increases vary depending on a car’s condition.
Keep your tires properly inflated and aligned. It can increase gas mileage up to three percent.
Change your oil. According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), you can improve your gas mileage by using the manufacturer’s recommended grade of motor oil. Motor oil that says “Energy Conserving” on the performance symbol of the American Petroleum Institute contains friction-reducing additives that can improve fuel economy.
Check and replace air filters regularly. Replacing clogged filters can increase gas mileage up to ten percent.

At the Pump: Use the Octane Level You Need

Your owner’s manual recommends the most effective octane level for your car. For most cars, the recommended gasoline is regular octane. In most cases, using a higher octane gas than the manufacturer recommends offers no benefit. Unless your engine is knocking, buying higher octane gasoline is a waste of money.

Be skeptical of claims for devices that will “boost your mileage by an extra 6 miles per gallon,” “improve your fuel economy up to 26 percent,” or the like. EPA has tested over 100 supposed gas-saving devices — including mixture “enhancers” and fuel line magnets — and found that very few provide any fuel economy benefits. The devices that work provide only marginal improvements. Some “gas-saving” devices may damage a car’s engine or increase exhaust emissions. How to maintain your vehicle

One of the reassuring qualities of contemporary cars is that they need much less-frequent service to keep them running well. Changing the spark plugs, breaker points, and condenser used to be a seasonal exercise, and body rust was accepted as a normal if unfortunate hazard of aging. Now many spark plugs can go 100,000 miles between changes. Electronic ignition has done away with the points and condenser. Chassis, suspensions, and even some transmissions are lubed for life. And factory rust-through warranties typically run six years or longer. What’s more, reliability has improved significantly. The result is that most late-model cars and trucks should be able to go 200,000 miles with regular upkeep. Here are a few simple, periodic checks and procedures you can do that will help you get there.

Three key tasks

Check the engine oil. Do it regularly--monthly for a vehicle in good condition; more often if you notice an oil leak or find you need to add oil routinely. The car should be parked on level ground so you can get an accurate dipstick reading. Don’t overfill. And if you do have a leak, find and fix it soon.

Check tire air pressure. Once a month and before any extended road trips, use an accurate tire-pressure gauge to check the inflation pressure in each tire, including the spare. Do this when the tires are cold (before the vehicle has been driven or after no more than a couple of miles of driving). Use the inflation pressure recommended by the vehicle’s manufacturer, not the maximum pressure embossed on the tire’s sidewall. The recommended pressure is usually found on a placard on a front doorjamb, in the glove compartment, or in the owner’s manual. Also be sure to inspect tires for abnormal or uneven wear, cuts, and any sidewall bulges you can see.

CR advises that digital tire-pressure gauges (which cost about $15 to $25) are probably the best bet overall because they will give an accurate reading or none at all. Many pencil-type gauges (typically $10 to $15) are good as well. Note that to check the pressure in a temporary spare tire, which is often 60 psi, you will need a gauge that goes higher than that--say from 0 up to 90 pounds.

Give it a wash. Try to wash the car every week, if you can. Wash the body and, if necessary, hose out the fender wells and undercarriage to remove dirt and road salt. It’s time to wax the finish when water beads become larger than a quarter.

Other checks at each oil change

For normal driving, many automakers recommend changing the engine oil and filter every 7,500 miles or six months, whichever comes first. This is sufficient for the majority of motorists. For “severe” driving--with frequent, very cold starts and short trips, dusty conditions, or trailer towing--the change interval should be shortened to every 3,000 miles or three months. (Check your owner’s manual for the specific intervals recommended for your vehicle.) Special engines such as diesels and turbocharged engines may need more-frequent oil changes.

Check the air filter. Remove the air-filter element and hold it up to a strong light. If you don’t see light, replace it. Regardless, follow the recommended service intervals.

Check the constant-velocity-joint boots. On front-wheel-drive and some four-wheel-drive vehicles, examine these bellowslike rubber boots, also known as CV boots, on the drive axles. Immediately replace any that are cut, cracked, or leaking. If dirt contaminates the CV joint it can quickly lead to an expensive fix.

Inspect the exhaust system. If you’re willing to make under-car inspections, check for rusted-through exhaust parts that need replacing. Also tighten loose clamps. Do this while the car is up on ramps. If a shop changes your oil, have them make these checks. Listen for changes in the exhaust sound while driving. It’s usually advisable to replace the entire exhaust system all at once rather than to repair sections at different times.

Look at the brakes. For most people it makes sense to have a shop check and service the brakes. If you handle your own brake work, remove all wheels and examine the brake system. Replace excessively worn pads or linings, and have badly scored rotors or drums machined or replaced. The brakes should be checked at least twice per year; more often if you drive a lot of miles.

Check the fluids. On many newer cars, the automatic transmission is sealed. On cars where it is not sealed, check the transmission dipstick with the engine warmed up and running (see the owner’s manual for details). Also check the power-steering-pump dipstick (it’s usually attached to the fluid-reservoir cap) and the level in the brake-fluid reservoir. If the brake-fluid level is low, top it up and have the system checked for leaks.

Clean the radiator. Prevent overheating by removing debris with a soft brush and washing the outside of the radiator with a detergent solution.

Check the battery. Check the battery’s terminals and cables to make sure they are securely attached, with no corrosion. If the battery has removable caps, check its fluid level every few months--especially in warmer climates.

Regular maintenance every two to four years

Drain and flush the cooling system. Considering the hassle of collecting and safely disposing of old antifreeze, you may want to leave this to a shop.

Change the automatic-transmission fluid. Many models require that you replace the fluid and filter every 36,000 miles--sooner if the normally pink fluid takes on a brownish tint. With some cars the fluid and, if applicable, the filter can go 100,000 miles or more. With other late models, the transmission fluid never needs to be changed. Check your owner’s manual for this information.

Replace the drive belts and hoses. Do this every two to three years, even if they don’t show any wear. If a belt becomes noisy, have it adjusted.

Change the timing belt. If your vehicle has a belt instead of a chain, stick to the manufacturer’s recommended replacement interval--usually every 60,000 to 80,000 miles. Check the owner’s manual or consult a dealer. Failure to change the timing belt can result in a very expensive engine repair if the belt should break.
